Equipment: 200 mL beaker, watch glass, ice cubes, bunsen burner, tripod, gauze mat.
Method:
- Fill the beaker with approximately 100 mL of water and place on a tripod over a bunsen burner.
- Fill the watch glass with a few pieces of ice and leave it on the bench.
- Light the bunsen burner and heat the water until it just starts to simmer. Do not boil the water.
- Turn the bunsen burner off and gently place the watch glass and ice on top of the beaker.
When the water beaker is getting heated it starts to turn into vapor. The vapor rises up and meets the cold part of the watch glass. It cools and condenses back to water and falls back into the beaker.
Evaporation is when a liquid turns into a gas.
Condensation is when the gas turns back to liquid.
