Why do people choose to get revenge instead of forgiveness? In the book of Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi, a memorable idea is revenge is an endless cycle. This idea is shown in chapter 80, chapter 70, and chapter 63.
An important idea from the book is that revenge is never the answer. This is shown in chapter 80 when Zelie realises that the blackest part of her rage finally has the power it’s always craved, the chance to avenge Mama. Now Baba. I’ll take these shadows of death and end them. Each and every one. No, Baba’s voice rings in her head, steady and strong. Revenge is meaningless. There’s still time to make this right. This made Zelie felt that she once again has let down her responsibility to protect her family members. This can be linked to the movie Avatar: The Last Air Bender when Aang said: “Now I know you understand how easy it is to hurt people you love.”
The same idea is also shown in chapter 75. When Zelie was to talking to Roën and said: “I could skin Saran alive and I still wouldn’t have my revenge.” I shrug off his hand. “It’s not about him. It’s not even about me. If I don’t stop him tomorrow, he’ll destroy my people like he destroyed me.” They both know that violence can be physically and emotionally weakening but she used her desire to get revenge as her motivation. But now her desire is to stop Saran from hurting others, rather than getting revenge specifically to those who have hurt her.
Another scene that fits in this topic is chapter 63. When Inan tells Zelie they had no choice and had to massacre the Maji. Inan says “I thought things could be different. I wanted them to be different. But after what we just saw, we have no choice. We can’t give people that kind of power.” “There’s always a choice” Zelie hiss. Revenge isn’t the only thing that you can do, there's always another choice.
An important idea is revenge is an endless cycle. I think that people choose to get revenge is because they think that it is their only choice. The last three paragraphs have shown us that revenge isn't your only choice. It showed that you can choose to forgive people despite of the bad that they have done.
